Carica papaya L.: A Tropical Fruit with Benefits beyond the Tropics

چکیده
Carica papaya L. (family: Caricaceae), also known as ‘papaya,’ is a tropical American fruit tree. Due to the bioactive components (carpaines, BITC, benzyl glucosinolates, latex, papain, zeaxanthin, choline, etc.) in its seeds, leaves, and fruits, it revered for excellent antioxidant, digestive, nutraceutical benefits. Papayas are high vitamins A, B, C, E, K, folate, pantothenic acid, lycopene, lutein, magnesium, copper, calcium, potassium. Being rich fiber, antioxidants, vitamin lowers cholesterol arteries; prevents arthritis; reduces aging, cancer, macular degradation, risk of cardiovascular diseases, stress; increases platelet count; controls dengue fever; facilitates digestion, body weight. Papaya leaf extract, with many vitro case studies combination therapies modern medicine, especially cancers other viral has been found be an efficient cure. Humans have cultivated cultivars millions years because their significant commercial, medicinal, agronomic value. Several reports published on genetic modification resistance abiotic (herbicide, Al toxicity, biotic stressors (PRSV, mites, Phytophthora, etc.), delaying ripening, improving shelf life. However, most these traits not introduced globally all commercial varieties. Unraveling genetics shed light various domestication impacts, evolutionary patterns, sex determination tree crops. It serves potential step toward developing new fight climate-oriented stress. Furthermore, extensive research stability ‘transgene’ across generations, ‘yield-penalty’ caused by transgene, required. Thus, meticulous crop improvement necessary long-term food health security. This review article encompasses information traditional medicinal uses, nutritional properties, phytochemistry, diseases etiology, post-harvest measures, genomics, biotechnological strategies (for improvement), value-added products

The Medicinal Properties of the Papaya, Carica papaya L
Quite surprisingly, historians know little about Hippocrates, the physician often referred to as "the father of medicine". However, we do know that he was a strong advocate of the use of medicinal plants to prevent and cure diseases. He recorded between three hundred and four hundred plant remedies in his writing and during the middle ages herbal remedies were passed down from generation to gen...
متن کاملIsolation and functional characterization of a lycopene β-cyclase gene that controls fruit colour of papaya (Carica papaya L.)
The colour of papaya fruit flesh is determined largely by the presence of carotenoid pigments. Red-fleshed papaya fruit contain lycopene, whilst this pigment is absent from yellow-fleshed fruit. The conversion of lycopene (red) to beta-carotene (yellow) is catalysed by lycopene beta-cyclase. This present study describes the cloning and functional characterization of two different genes encoding...
متن کاملCharacterization of a high oleic oil extracted from papaya (Carica papaya L.) seeds Caracterização de um óleo alto oleico extraído de sementes de mamão (Carica papaya L.)
Carica papaya L. seeds have been used for decades in parts of Asia and South America as a vermifugal agent (ADEBIYI; GANESAN ADAIKAN; PRASAD, 2003). In addition, papaya seed preparations have been used in folk medicine due to its abortive properties and to favor a good menstrual flow (RAO; JAMIR, 1982). Apart from these uses, since papaya seeds have a spicy flavor, they are used to adulterate b...
متن کاملCarica Papaya- A Herbal Medicine
Medicinal plants have played an essential role in the development of human culture. Carica papaya Linn.is a monoecious, dioecious or hermaphrodite tree; it belongs to the family Caricaceae. It is widely cultivated throughout world and is used as food and traditional medicine, particularly as an antiseptic and contraceptive. Papaya contains many biologically active compounds. Fruit, leaves, late...
متن کاملGenetic characterization of papaya plants (Carica papaya L.) derived from the first backcross generation.
The limited number of papaya varieties available reflects the narrow genetic base of this species. The use of backcrossing as a breeding strategy can promote increases in variability, besides allowing targeted improvements. Procedures that combine the use of molecular markers and backcrossing permit a reduction of the time required for introgression of genes of interest and appropriate recovery...
